*The date of the trip is April 28, 2012. We’ll leave at 6:30 AM and return by 10PM. All high school band and choir member are eligible to go.

*The cost of the trip is $100. The check/money order deposit will only be $50 and is is due by February 21. Students and chaperones must have a total of $100 in their account by April 1. You may pay the entire amount at any time. All payments need to be made in the form of a check or money order. No cash can be accepted. Please put payments in the booster mailbox in the band room. Please be sure to put the name of the student on the check...especially if parent/student last names are different.

*The cost of the trip includes round trip transportation, entrance to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Indians game ticket, and dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe (tax and gratuity is included). Students/chaperones will be responsible for buying their own lunch at either the Rock Hall or Progressive field, and any other incidentals they may wish to purchase.

*There is one fundraiser for you to use to raise money for your trip. Please take advantage of it by doing your best. Orders for the jewelry/magazine fundraiser with payment are due no later than Monday, February 13. Products will be delivered in March. Please be sure to submit payment with your order and make check/money order payable to “Fairbanks Music Boosters”. No cash can be accepted.

*We need at four adult chaperones for the trip. Let Mr. Keller know ASAP if your parents are interested. Chaperones will be accepted on a first paid/first accepted basis. More chaperones may be able to go on the trip, but it depends on our busing situation. You will be informed by February 22 if you are chosen to chaperone. Deposits will be refunded for those who paid but are not going.

*It is expected that payments be made in a timely fashion. The deposit is non-refundable after February 21, as Indians tickets will be ordered on that date.

Chicago is Dead...

The Chicago trip is dead in the water. The cost was too prohibitive for most, and we only had 14 students and two chaperones express interest. We needed at least 30 people to make it feasible.

I am working on an alternative trip for Saturday, April 28, to Cleveland to see the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, attend an Indians game, and eat dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe. Details will be available next week. The cost will be $100 or less.

1. The date of the trip is April 27-29, 2012. We’llleave at 7AM on Friday and return by 11PM on Sunday. All high school band and choir member areeligible to go.

2. The cost of the trip is $675. The check/moneyorder deposit will only be $150 is due by January 27. Students must have a total of $350 in theiraccount by February 17, $450 by March 9,and all $675 by March 30.

3. There are two fundraisers for you to use toraise money for your trip. Please takeadvantage of them by doing your best. The first fundraiser will begin on Tuesday, January 17. The profit from this fundraiser may not beapplied as your deposit, but will apply to your next payment.

4. The trip cost is based on 30 students andchaperones. If we have significantlyless people going, the cost may escalate. If we have more people going, the price will go DOWN. Please keep usupdated of your status if it changes. Iffor any reason you over pay, you will be refunded in cash to use as spendingmoney before the trip.

5. We need at least six adult chaperones for thetrip. Let Mr. Keller know ASAP if yourparents are interested. Rooms are basedon quad occupancy. If chaperones wish tohave less than 4 in their room, that can be arranged, but the cost willincrease. Please contact me for details.

If you plan on going on thistrip, or your parents plan on chaperoning, please sign up on Mr. Keller’s doorby January 20, and submit your deposit and permission slip by

January 27, 2012.

Payment Schedule and Policies

Minimum Balances:

January 27 - $150Deposit due

February 17 – Balanceof $350

March 9 – Balance of$450

The deposit is non-refundable and serves as a good-faith gesture that your student (or you) will, indeed, go on this trip. It must be paid in the form of a check, or money order. To protect both you and the music boosters, NO CASH WILL BE ACCEPTED. Fundraising profits cannot be applied as a trip deposit. This deposit secures your tickets for Jersey Boys and the Wynton Marsalis concert, as well as dining and hotel.

Each subsequent payment is refundable only until the next payment is due. For example:

If you pay the deposit and thendecide in January that you will not be going, you’re out $150.

If you pay the deposit and thefirst payment, but change your mind before February 17, you can still get $200back, but not the deposit.

If you pay the deposit and firstpayment, but decide after February 17 that you’re not going, you’re out $350.

If you have any questions on this refund policy, please call or email Mr. Keller.

Trip cost includes all entry fees, transportation, lodging, insurance, fees, taxes, and gratuities. The only cash you should need is for lunch each day, food en-route, and for shopping/souvenirs.

If you overpay, or if fundraising profits raise you above the cost of the trip, that money will be refunded before we take the trip (this might be good spending money to send with students on the trip!)

Chaperones must be a parent of a student on the trip or a Fairbanks staff member over the age of 21. Please understand that I cannot make exceptions to this rule, so please don’t ask.

· Finally: If we have more than 30 people going on the trip, the cost may be LESSthan $675. If it is indeed less, thedifference will be refunded to you prior to the trip. If we fill the bus with45 people, the cost is only $526 per person!

Holiday Concert 2011

Monday, December 19, 2011, 7:00 P.M.

Order of performance:

6^th Grade Band

MS Choir

High School Choir

Please be in the middle school cafeteria ready to warm up at 6:40. We will play #86 in your book and play straight thru each piece. At 7:00, we will go to the gym to find our places and present our program. After we perform, please take your seat with your family. After the HS concert band has concluded their program, you are free to go.

MS Choir

Middle School Choir will warm in the high school cafeteria at 6:30. Members also in band will go to Mrs. Keller’s room at 6:45

HS Choir:

Be in the Middle School Cafeteria at at 6:55 to warm up. You will stay in the cafeteria until approximately 7:30, when we will go to the gym to find our places on the risers and present our program. After we perform, please take your seat with your family. After the HS concert band has concluded their program, you are free to go.

JH Concert Band:

You need to be seated with your family with your instruments and folder ready to watch the 6th grade band at 7PM. Immediately after the High School Choir’s program, go promptly to your performance seats on the gym floor. We will warm up and then play a chorale and then perform our program. After we are done, we’ll file out and then you will sit in with your family. If you share instruments with a HS band member, they will be waiting for you in the corner to take your instrument. Do NOT go back to the band room.

HS concert band:

Be seated with your family with your instrument/music when the concert begins at 7:00. After the JHCB, take your seat on the gym floor and we will warm there. If you are sharing with a JH bando, they will hand you your instrument in the corner by our entrance after their performance. We will play a warm up chorale, then play our program. Please stick around for a few minutes for your official photo.

General Information

If you are on tear-down crew, please be stay and help fold chairs and move equipment. Bonus points are available. A set-up crew is also needed at 5:30. Sign up on Mr. Keller’s office window to receive credit.

It is asked that all performers stay for the entire concert. It is only polite and good concert manners. Only students excused in advance may leave before the end of the concert. Please treat other performers as you would like to be treated.

SIT WITH YOUR FAMILY when not performing. Complaints have been received about large groups of students sitting in the back of the gym making TOO MUCH NOISE while other groups are performing. You are expected to use your BEST CONCERT MANNERS, students.

Students are asked to be on their best behavior while not performing. There is NO reason to talk while another group is performing. Please only leave the gym between groups unless it is an emergency.

HS band members are asked to stay briefly after the concert to have their official group photo taken.

Attire:

JH & 6th Band – Gentlemen are to wear nice pants, dress shoes, shirt and tie. No jeans or tennis shoes. Ladies are to wear a dress, skirt and blouse, or nice pants outfit. I respectfully ask that skirts cover your knees when seated. Please look your best 

HS band and choir – Gentlemen need to wear black dress pants, black socks, and black shoes. Gentlemen are also to be wearing a long-sleeved black collared dress shirt. Ladies are to dress in concert black as well. You may wear pants or skirt. The traditional skirt is floor-length. A simple gold or silver necklace, or pearls are a perfectly acceptable accessory. Keep earrings small and non-distracting. Look classy 

If, per chance, severe weather is imminent, watch your regular TV station, and/or check the band web page (www.fairbanksband.org), blog (www.fhsbando.blogspot.com), or Twitter (www.twitter.com/fairbanksband) or check your INTANT ALERT. Students SHOULD know of any cancellations before school is over, but if it gets bad after school, these are your methods of information.

OSU Field Trip Update

The band field trip is FRIDAY!!!! Here are a few last minute details for students and parents:

*Students will load buses behind the middle school at 8:15am. All regular bus rules apply. Students must ride their assigned bus both ways.

Bus 1 - 6th Band (31 students and parents)
Bus 2 - 5th Band, Last name A-P (40 students and parents)
Bus 3 - JHCB, Last name A-R (34 students and parents)
Bus 4 - JHCB, Last name S-Z. 5th Band, Last name R-Z (36 students and parents)

*Chaperones are to meet in Mr. Keller's room at 8am for a chaperone meeting. Parents are to ride the bus their child is riding.

*Students are to wear nice school clothes. This is not a dress up event, so t-shirt, jeans, and tennis shoes are just fine...just make sure they are good-looking thsirt, jeans, and tennis shoes.

*Students need to bring a sack lunch or money for fast food. The lunch options are Wendy's, McDonald's, and Taco Bell. Students may not bring food on the bus after our stop.

*All band mebers are to be on their best behavior at all times. Please remember your conduct reflects not only on you, but also on your school and your community. Have a good time, but please be courteous, polite, and well-behaved. I have no doubt you will excel at this...Fairbanks students are the best!

First Pep Band Is Friday 12/2!

The Fairbanks Basketball Pep Band makes its premiere performance this Friday, December 2. Here are the details for members:

*Rehearsal begins promptly at 5:30. Please be in time.

*You must enter through the front door of the high school and sign in on the attendance sheet. No one will be admitted through the entrance by the band room.

*Wear your pep band tshirt, which should be delivered on Thursday.

*Please plan on staying for the entire game. Varsity contests are usually over around 9-9:15pm. Please arrange your ride so you are not left waiting.

*Always be ready to play on short notice. Stay near your instrument.

*Get involved in the game! The pep band is a force to be reckoned with and are the driving force behind school spirit. Let's cheer our panthers on to a victory!

*If you cannot attend a game, it needs to be for a good reason and you must notify me in advance. If you signed up for pep band, you signed up to attend all the games unless excused in advance. Do your part and be a strong contributor!

Hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving! I apologize for getting this out late. It has been really hectic trying to get my schedules down. A few points to let everyone know about.

1) This week begins Pep band. We will not be feeding the kids full meals like in years past. What we would like to do is have parents sign up to bring a snack for our band kids. If you are willing to do so please let me know. The games we are looking at are:

We will be selling raffle tickets for the Ping Pong table....more details on this below.

We are selling the Panther blocks which we have been selling.

I know I am forgetting something at this point and my brain just isn't functioning. If any booster is reading this and knows please send out to all. Other than the snacks.

2) We will have a raffle for a ping pong table that will be raffled off at our Holiday Concert...right before Christmas. I will put a flyer together and details will be going home with elementary children and it will be on the announcement in the high school and middle school.

3) We also need some parents who are willing to wash the uniforms...please be aware if you have hard water than please do not volunteer as this will ruin them. We need to get them washed and hung back in the closet. Please let me know if you are willing!

The Milford Center holiday parade is this Sunday, Nov. 27. Here are the details for FMB members:

11:30am - The school is open to get your uniform, instrument, shoes, or whatever you need.
12:00pm - School will be locked.
12:15pm - Warm up/Rehearse at Milford Community Center, near the playground
1:00 pm - Parade Begins.
1:30 pm - Parade Ends

*Either take your uniform home on Tuesday, or come to the school at 11:30 to get your uniform. Please be ready to warm at 12:15. All band members are to be in full uniform unless weather dictates otherwise.

*If you do not have gloves, they will be available for $2. Do not expect a loan. If you need gloves, bring $2.

*Music is to be memorized. We will alternate the The Victors and our Holiday medley. Extra copies will be available in the band room and at the parade site for review.

*Raincoats will be available at the parade site if they are needed. Dress in layers under your uniform if the weather is going to be chilly. The current forecast is 58* and a 40% chance of rain...but that may change. I'll keep you posted here and on the blog.

*After Thanksgiving, ALL uniforms are to be turned in to be cleaned. If parts are missing or damaged, band members are financially responsible for this.

5-8 Band: OSU Field Trip - UPDATE

I have had 19 parents RSVP to chaperone and we are able to accommodate everyone! Chaperones need to ride the bus and help supervise students on the bus ride and during lunch and the concert. More details for chaperones will be available the week of November 28. Thank you so much for your help!

Students are to wear nice school clothes on this trip. You do not have to dress up per se, but should avoid torn/tattered clothing if possible. Please look presentable.

I do not have permission slips from some students. If I do not have your $5 and permission slip by Friday, November 18, I will assume that you do not have parental permission to attend the trip and will be in classes on that day.

Otterbein Audition Workshop- Dec 3

As you know, auditioning for a college/university music program can often be a daunting task for high school students – even though my audition for my undergraduate institution was decades ago, I still remember every detail of the experience, both good and bad! To those ends, the Otterbein University Department of Music faculty is very pleased to announce our fourth annual audition workshop designed for high school juniors and seniors on Saturday, December 3, 2011. Students participating in the workshop will not only walk away with a lot of useful information about the entire audition process, but they will also be given a DVD of a ‘trial audition,’ along with helpful critique from seasoned professionals from the Otterbein Department of Music faculty.

PSA: American Tapestry Nov 10 & 11

From Mrs. Carol Stillings:

American Tapestry is the theme for this year’s presentation by the Union County Singsations. Singsations, a group of people from the Union county area that love to sing and dance, have been entertaining audiences since 2003. Directed by Dee Winters and choreographed by Miriam Carson, the evening promises to be entertaining for all ages. It begins at 7:30 and will be presented tonight, Thursday, 11/10, and tomorrow evening, Friday, 11/11, at the Veterans’ Memorial Auditorium on W. 6th St. Marysville.

There are no tickets (donations will be accepted to cover cost of the presentation), just come and bring your family and friends for an evening of laughter, enjoyment and reflection as you listen to songs from Ragtime, The Wiz, Beauty and the Beast to name a few and a stirring finale of “America”.

I hope you’ll plan to come. In previous of years, I’ve waited to go till the last evening o and afterward would regret that I wouldn’t be able to see it again. Come tonight if you’re able; you may want to see it again tomorrow night.

Alumni Pep Band - Dec. 22

The ninth annual Fairbanks alumni pep band will be held on Thursday, December 22, 2011. FHS band alumni from all bands and eras are welcome to come back to play on the stage and cheer the Panthers on to a victory!

We'll warm up at 6pm in the band room and perform between games and during the boys' varsity game. I promise the set list will be easy, fun, and not too taxing on the chops...even if you haven't dusted off the chops in a year...or two...or ten. LouieX2, Tequila, Land of 1000, Can't turn you loose, Sloopy, On Broadway, et al. It'll be fun, I promise!

Be sure to spread the word to you band friends who are not frequent visitors to the blog or on Facebook so we can get the biggest and best alumni pep band yet!

FMB: Veteran's Day Assembly Nov. 10

The FMB will be participating in the middle school Veteran's Day assembly on Thursday, November 10.

Band members will be excused from class at 8:30 and need to get their instrument and head to the middle school gym to warm up. The assembly will start at 8:45 and our performance obligation will be completed by 9am. No particular dress code is to be followed. We will perform the Star Spangled Banner and America the Beautiful from our pre-game show. When our performance is completed at 9am, HS members are to put their instruments away and return to class. 8th grade members are to put their instrument away and return to the gym for the remainder of the assembly. Please do not play your instrument in the hallway while in transit.

This brief appearance is greatly appreciated by Mrs. Bartow, the middle school staff, and the over 30 veterans who will be present for Thursday's ceremony. I'm looking forward to being a part of it :-)

Band 5-8 Field Trip to OSU Dec. 2

The members of the 5-8 grade bands will be attending a field trip on Friday, December 2. Ohio State puts on its annual "Musical Celebration" for area students, and feature ALL of the music department's performing ensembles in a 90-minute concert. Details are on the image below (click to enlarge), which also serves as the permission slip for the trip.

Students need to send in the permission slip, plus $5 check payable to "Fairbanks Band" (preferred) or $5 cash (acceptable) in a sealed envelope by November 14 to be able to go on the trip. At least 10 parent chaperones are also needed for the trip, as we will be taking over 120 students! If students do not return the slip or payment, they will not be permitted to go on the trip. We will be stopping for lunch on the way home so students need cash for fast food or need to pack a sack lunch. It's going to be a great day of musical fun!

Band members have the third quarter of the varsity game off. Games end approximately 9pm. Members are expected to stay until the game’s conclusion.

If you cannot attend a performance, please notify Mr. Keller as far in advance as possible. We will rehearse before each game, so you need to be in the band room and ready to play at the report time.

Please dress appropriately for each game. The preferred dress is your basketball band t-shirt, which is provided to you free of charge. If it is in the wash, please wear school colors…red and white. Don’t show up in the opposing team’s colors.

You will be admitted free of charge to games at which we are playing. Please enter through the front door and sign in at the ticket table. The back door is only for set percussionists.

When on stage, do not play unless we are playing as a group. Do not play while the game is in progress. There are only certain times at which we are permitted to play. Band members are expected to stay on the stage and ready to perform during the game. Non-band students and guests are not permitted on the stage during the game.

Music folders will be distributed soon. They are on LOAN to you and are to be treated with care and respect. Please keep the music neat and in numerical order.

The sign-up sheet for pep band is on Mr. Keller’s office door. Please put your name, instrument, and t-shirt size on the list when you sign up.

Please be on time. Games are usually over around 9-9:15. Please arrange to have your ride to pick you up on time.

Individual practice may be required for you to get down the tunes we play. It is expected you play your best at all times. Believe me….people are listening to you!

Introduction

This handbook is published to eliminate the possibility of student and parent misunderstanding by providing a source for band policy. It is hoped that all band members and parents take the time to read and understand their responsibilities for the smooth operation of the Fairbanks Band program. Please keep this handbook for future reference.

Statement of Purpose

The Fairbanks Band program has several important purposes and goals:

To provide a quality education in the musical arts;

To improve students self-confidence, self-discipline, and work ethic;

To provide leadership opportunities and to foster an atmosphere conducive to music and learning;

To prepare students to become better persons, musicians, and citizens by fostering responsibility, personal excellence, and teamwork;

To encourage artistic expression and to provide a forum for students to perform music to parents, students, teachers, and members of the community;

To provide a pleasant and helpful social experience for all involved in the Fairbanks band program and;

To instill in students an awareness of music’s important role in the enrichment of the human spirit.

A Few Words About Responsibility

The band program in the Fairbanks Local Schools forms a vital and highly visible part of the total school and community life. This group represents a large, highly-trained, hard-working, and well-disciplined segment of the student body. The responsibility associated with membership in this organization is broken down as follows:

Responsibility to Ourselves

We owe ourselves the responsibility of always demanding the best that each of us has inside of us. As individuals and members of the group, we must set personal and group goals and perceive each as a challenge to be achieved to the best of our potential.

Responsibility to Each Other

We owe each other the patience and understanding to respect the rights of each other and form relationships of mutual respect and caring. Anti-social actions will simply hurt each individual and subvert the goals of the group. The phrase about a chain being only as strong as its weakest link is especially applicable within the context of a band program, and we owe to each other the sense of responsibility to do our individual best so as not to limit the band to shallow individual limitations.

Responsibility to Our School and Community

We owe our classmates, parents, and fellow citizens a fair return on the investment of time, money, and interest which they give to us. We must at all times strive for the best possible performances and the highest standards of conduct at all times, as our action reflect not just on ourselves individually, but on the Fairbanks Schools, and the community of Union County.

Membership

Students in the Fairbanks Band must meet the following criteria:

Must have successfully completed the 8th grade music program.

Must be officially registered for band as an academic class

Must have permission of a parent or guardian to participate.

Have the approval and consent of the director.

Exceptions may be approved at the director’s discretion.

Conduct

All school rules are in effect at all times, whether the group is on campus or any other location (i.e. concerts, contests, social events.).

The members of the Fairbanks Band are representatives of Fairbanks High School and are expected to conduct themselves accordingly.

Any unbecoming behavior can result in dismissal from the group, temporarily or permanently.

Attendance

As a member of the Fairbanks Concert Band, you have an obligation not only to yourself, but to the organization to attend all rehearsals and performances. These are all mandatory events. There are very few excused absences and these must be cleared in advance with the director. Each member must follow this procedure to receive an excused absence from an event:

To be excused from a rehearsal:

The excuse must meet the school’s guidelines for excused absences. Reasons such as work, babysitting, no ride, or events not approved in advance by the director are unexcused absences.

If a student is absent to school, the excused absence for school covers that day's rehearsal. No additional note needs to be given to Mr. Keller. The also means, however, that an unexcused absence to school also counts as an unexcused rehearsal. If a student is unexcused on a day when there is an after school rehearsal, that counts as TWO unexcused rehearsals!

To be excused from an after school rehearsal, a note from a parent must be submitted at least forty-eight (48) hours in advance. Even if students are excused from an after school rehearsal, they still must make up the rehearsal time with the director on an individual basis.

Acceptable excuses for missing an after school rehearsal include personal illness, or a death in the family. Other reasons, such as no ride, have to babysit, have a dentist/doctor appointment, detention, forgot, etc. are not excused, and will negatively affect a student’s grade.

To be excused from a performance:

Attendance at performances is of the utmost importance, as they affect the quality of the group. The only excused reasons for missing a performance are personal illness, death or marriage in the immediate family, military duty, and school sponsored events cleared in advance with the director. Reasons such as work, dates, vacations, college visits, or any other reason will be considered unexcused and will negatively affect the student’s attendance grade.

The director must be contacted by a parent about the absence in question at least two weeks (14 days) in advance. The earlier I am contacted, the better the chances of the absence being excused

In order to be excused, a parent must contact Mr. Keller via phone or in person as to the nature of the absence. If it is an approved excused absence, then the parent must then submit a note to the director to document the absence.

Mr. Keller reserves the right to enforce or ignore this policy for extenuating circumstances.

Again, The following reasons are the only ones considered excusable for a performance:

* Sickness or emergency.

* Death or marriage in the immediate family

* Military Duty

* Other school-sponsored events (to be cleared in advance)

A Word on Vacations:

Vacations, family or otherwise, should be planned around rehearsal and performance times when given the schedule in advance. Vacations will NOT be an excused absence from a performance during the school year. All students are to attend band camp unless excused by the director.

“It is the obligation of the Fairbanks music department to provide notice as far ahead of time as possible, and in return, it is the obligation of each student to arrange for his or her schedule to meet these commitments.”

Grading Policy

The breakdown of a student’s grade is as follows:

30 points - Attendance at performances.

30 points - Attendance at rehearsals

30 points - Conduct, effort, and attitude.

10 points - Tests (may be playing or written tests.)

Total: 100 points

Tests

Each student will complete at least one playing test per term. The material will consist of music the group is currently playing and students will be notified at least one week in advance of any such tests. Students will be graded on a 10-point scale. If more than one test is given, the final score will be the average of all playing scores.

Attendance Grade

Rehearsal

The rehearsal attendance caption contains 20 points. Each unexcused rehearsal will incur a 5-point deduction from the 20 points.

Performance

The performance attendance caption contains 30 points. As performances are the most important responsibility of a marching band member, any unexcused performance will result in the forfeiture of all 30 of these points.

Conduct Grade

Good behavior, substantial effort, and a positive attitude are par for the course in this group. It is assumed that there will be no problems in this caption. However, if incidents do occur of unacceptable behavior, or lack of effort is shown, the following scale will be applied:

First Offense - a verbal warning will be given.

Second Offense - the offense will be documented and five points will be deducted from the 20-point caption. Detention may be assigned.

Third Offense - the offense will be documented, a copy will be sent home to the parents and five points will be deducted from the 20-point caption. Detention will be assigned.

Fourth Offense - the offense will be documented, and a conference with the student’s parents will be scheduled. Each successive offense will deduct five more points from the 20-point caption. Again, detentions of greater lengths will also be assigned with each offense.

Serious Offenses or Disruptions may call for expulsion from the group.

Grade Summary

The total number of points at the end of a term will be tallied and the following scale will determine a letter grade:

Grades will not be rounded up. No exceptions.

Extra credit may be granted at the judgement of the director

Rehearsal

Please show respect for your fellow band members by remaining quiet. To effectively make music together, we need clear communication. Talking and horseplay detract from our level of concentration and performance.

Rehearsal will begin promptly three minutes after the bell has rung during the school day. Students are expected to be in their seat, ready to play when rehearsal is to start. Unexcused tardiness will not be tolerated.

Students are only to touch and play their own instrument. Only percussionists may handle percussion equipment.

No gum is permitted in the band room during rehearsals.

Listen intently to all comments the director has to make during rehearsal. Each comment may apply to you, also. Be attentive.

Learn your part in each composition thoroughly. Home practice will be a requirement during you band career.

ADAPT TO CHANGE! Changes often need to be made to improve our performance. Don’t get frustrated. Change is a necessary part of your life in this group.

Students are not to read in class. Novels, notes and the like will be confiscated on sight. Please concentrate on the task at hand.

Never say “I can’t...”

How you practice a performance is generally how it will be given on the final day.

Sectional Rehearsals

During concert band season, there are several after-school sectional rehearsals scheduled. The reason for these rehearsals is to work more in-depth on the music in a setting where there is a more favorable student-to-teacher ratio. They are an important part of putting the music together and attendance will be required. If there is a conflict, such as basketball practice or the like, the absence may be excused if it is made up at an alternate time. If a person misses a one hour sectional, they can make it up at a time more convenient with them. This time will be one half hour of individual practice with the director. If the sectional rehearsal is not made up in this manner, the absence will be considered unexcused and will be reflected as such in the student’s grade.

Tests, Chair Order, and Challenges

At the beginning of concert band season, a playing test will be held to determine playing ability. Seating will be assigned, not necessarily by ability. A balanced band is not always seated strongest to weakest. Students will be informed of their scores, but seating order is at the discretion of the director. At specified times, any student may challenge any student playing the same instrument for his or her seating position. The process is as follows:

One week before the challenge date, the challenger must declare a challenge. The challenger must write whom they are challenging on the challenge sheet and notify the person they are challenging.

On that same day, the instructor will inform both persons what music the challenge will cover. It may cover one piece or all pieces that the group is currently playing.

On the challenge date, both will play for the director, the higher chair playing first. The challenging player must play significantly better than the first player to change seating. If this is the case, the players will switch seats. This will remain in effect until another challenge negates the change. All decisions of the director are final.

Please keep in mind that we all strive for a common goal. Challenges are a means of friendly competition and a way to improve each player. Do not take the results personally.

Graduation

Even though graduation is after the end of the school year, it is a graded and required performance. Your grade will be affected if you are absent and unexcused from this most important performance. Please mark your calendars: Graduation is on Saturday, May 26 at 10 A.M.

Home Practice

Individual practice is essential to developing and maintaining playing skills. It is asked that each member practice a sufficient amount to be able perform the required music at an acceptable level. The director reserves the right to use practice records to monitor home practice if sufficient effort is not being presented.

Basketball Band

All members of the Fairbanks Concert Band are eligible to participate in the Fairbanks Basketball Band. This is an extracurricular group that rehearses before and performs at most home boys’ basketball games. Details will be made available in November about participation in this popular and energetic group. This fulfills the participation segment of your grade for the third grading period.

Marching Band

Marching Band is a wonderful learning and social experience for all musicians. The group performs at all football games, several contests, festivals, and parades from August through November. ALL concert band members are encouraged to participate in the Fairbanks Marching Band each fall. Students should decide if they are going to participate by April of the preceding year, so members have opportunities to raise money for marching band camp, which begins on the last Sunday of July each summer. If you are interested, contact Mr. Keller as soon as possible.

Student Responsibilities

Preparation

Students are expected to come prepared to all rehearsals and performances. Music, instruments, and a pencil are a must for every class meeting. Each student should come prepared for performances with all parts of their uniform, instrument, and music. In chronic cases of forgotten instruments or music, situations will be handled as behavior problems and will be treated as such in the grading policy.

Facilities

It is the responsibility of all students to keep the band room, stage area, and storage areas tidy and clean. Instruments should be put on shelves when not in use during the day. Practice rooms are to be left cleaner than you found them. Stack chairs and stands neatly after each rehearsal. Students are not permitted in the band office unless the director is present or has given permission for entry. Students are allowed to use the band office phone if permission is granted, however, long distance calls must be made collect or with a credit card.

Music and Folders

Music and folders are property of the Fairbanks Band. They are to be taken well care of. Music is to be turned in after the performance of the piece in the same condition in which it was issued. Students will be held financially responsible for lost or damaged parts.

School Instruments

Instruments that are property of the Fairbanks Band and are issued to you, and are to be treated even better than your own. Repairs and replacements are costly and are not affordable in this day and age. Students must sign a check-out form and students will be held financially responsible for any damage done to the instrument while is in their possession.

Uniforms

Ladies are to dress in concert black. Skirts are to be knee length or longer, but you may also wear pants. Keep jewelry neutral and small. Please, no white accents, red stripes, or colors at all. Keep it simple. Gentlemen will be provided a tux shirt and tie. They must provide their own black dress pants, black socks, and black dress shoes. Tux shirts are to be returned in the same condition that they were issued…clean and on a hanger.

Transportation

It is the responsibility of each member to arrange his or her transportation to and from the school before and after events. Itineraries are published no later than Tuesday of each week and are historically accurate within 15 minutes. Do not wait to arrive at the school to arrange your ride home. Band Staff will stay 30 minutes after the bus returns, and are not responsible for members who did not arrange for their own transportation.

Fundraising

It is frequently necessary for students to participate in fund-raising activities for the music program for reason such as funding band camp, buying supplies or new instruments, to finance travel, or purchasing new music. It is expected that all students participate in these activities to insure the future of the group. If, for some reason, a student is not to participate, the director must discuss this reason with a parent or guardian.

Reeds, valve oil, etc.

Mr. Keller will no longer sell reeds and valve oil. Students must purchase directly from Colonial Music. Order forms are available on the info rack. Order forms with payment attached should be given to Mr. Keller and he will complete the transaction with the Colonial Music salesperson. If you have questions about this procedure, please contact Mr. Keller. Woodwinds should always have at least two playable reeds in their case at all times. NO REED LOANS WILL BE MADE. Please PLAN AHEAD! If you do not have a reed for rehearsal, it will negatively affect your grade.

Student Leadership Opportunities

Section Leaders

Section leaders are selected by the director to assist in rehearsing music in sectionals, organization, and operation of the concert band program. Selection is based not only on musicianship and test scores, but leadership and scholarship as well.

Band Aides

Band aides are veteran members of the band that come to the band room during study hall or lunch to assist the director. Jobs may include photocopying, stapling, sorting music, folding programs, or keeping the band room organized. Like office aides, band aides are expected to keep up on their grades, or be sent back to study hall.

Bus Conduct

When you leave Fairbanks High School with the band, you are a representative of the school and should conduct yourselves as such. It is asked that you follow these policies when traveling on the bus.

No smoking, drugs, or alcohol is permitted, period.

Profanity will not be tolerated.

Maintain silence at all railroad crossings.

Use moderation in singing and talking. Screaming and laughing loudly bothers some people.

Keep hands and arms inside the bus at all times.

Stay in your seats while the bus is in motion.

Reserve front seats for the directors.

Stay on the bus until you are asked to unload.

Do not ask to change buses.

Be on time for departure. You could get left behind.

Do not yell out bus windows.

Leave the bus as you found it: clean and with the windows up.

Band members are requested not to ask permission to drive to away events.

Band members may not be excused from a bus ride unless a parent makes direct arrangements with the Director.

In the absence of the director, chaperones are to be treated with an equal amount of respect and what they say, goes!

All other school rules are in effect on the bus, also.

The Fairbanks Marching Band gives its annual performances at Fairbanks Elementary School and the Circleville Pumpkin Show on Thursday, October 20. Band Members will need to be in full uniform for both events so please bring black socks and Drillmasters.

Immediately after attendance in home room, band members need to report to the band room to prepare for the concert at the elementary which will begin at 9am. We will perform music from pre-game, contest, and senior shows as well as some cheers.

We will depart for Circleville around 10am and will return to FHS at 7pm. Band members will have some free time at the show and will need spending money for lunch and dinner. There are also games and rides, so bring an amount of money for your particular spending habits.

Tolles students are excused from classes on that day, as are all members. Band members are responsible for any make up work, in advance if possible. Please arrange with your teachers to make up quizzes and tests and to turn in homework. I don't want this trip to negatively affect your grade.

It will be a fun and rewarding day for all involved. Please be prepared for this big day!

Thanks to a stunning victory over division II Greenville, there is a possibility that the "men who wear the F" may have a berth in the 2011 OHSAA playoffs. If this does indeed occur, they will compete on Friday, November 4, at 7:30 PM. The site is yet to be determined based on our opponent. If the football team goes, so do we. Please reserve Friday, November 4 as a possible performance date. If you already have a conflict with this date, please contact me ASAP. If you do not have a conflict, do not schedule any events on this evening as the band will attend if the football team qualifies for the playoffs. Attendance will be required.

Booster Update from Mary Ellen

Just wanted to let everyone know that we will NOT be having a booster meeting this evening. We just met a couple weeks ago and not much has changed.

Need some feedback on a few things...

Is there anyone available to help out on November 12...at the Marysville High School to help sell tickets for a comedy show. We will be out-of-town that day due to our oldest two have senior night at Malone and we are attending. I need to know if we have enough to cover before I sign us up. Please let me know by tomorrow, which is Thursday.

We still have shoe money that is outstanding. We need to get that paid! These were to be paid over a month ago. Please do so by FRIDAY!

Also, October 25 is the day the cookie dough is due in. Please save boxes and Kroger/Walmart bags so we can use them to box it all up. Thanks for your help!

-Members are expected to be on their best behavior at all times when we are in uniform. Take good care of your uniform tonight.

-Please encourage your family and friends to come to the game and watch/listen to us. A friendly crowd is a good crowd!

-Dress is FULL UNIFORM. Wear shorts or slender pants under you uniform pants. NO VISIBLE JEWELRY is to be worn when in uniform. Band shoes and black crew-length socks are required. Ladies - long hair is to be off the collar in a military style.

-We will performing the entire contest show today. Please assure me you have all of your music memorized and all your drill learned. Be well rested and hydrated for this event.

-The boosters will have snack food available, but if you wish to eat at the concession stand, buy a contest tshirt, or shop the band merchandise, you'll want to bring some spending money.

-Please be where you need to be when you need to be there. There will be quite a bit of free time to watch other bands and to eat, so please keep track of time.

-Show the crowd and the other bands that we are a classy organization by being polite, positive, and encouraging. Every band is a lot like us and deserves to be treated how we wish to be treated. Make a good name for yourself both ON and OFF the field.

-Please encourage parents, family, and friends to attend the contest. Crowd Response is a caption on judging sheets. They CAN make a difference! There is a small entry fee for the general public. Band members are admitted free.

-If you riding home with a parent instead of riding the bus home, you MUST give a note to Mr. Keller or Ana before we depart at 3pm. You MUST TRAVEL WITH A PARENT and not another student or friend. Band members who are returning for the homecoming dance may leave as soon as your uniform and instrument are loaded on the trailer.

As a final motivational prize, each performing group has been divided into sections. When the sale is over, the section of the band or choir with the highest average of items sold per person will win a day off from rehearsal and will get to eat pizza and pop and watch a movie instead!

As stated earlier, students who choose to make a donation in lieu of selling do not qualify for ducks or cash prizes, but these donations DO count toward your group sales average. I will credit students with 1 item for every $5 of donations. For example: a $25 donation will credit your group with 5 items.

The music department is kicking off the annual fall fundraiser today! Sales packets are coming home with your students today. Here is the letter that comes home in your packet:

Dear Musicians and Parents,

The Fairbanks Music Department is the largest department in the school, serving over 220 students in eight grades. It takes money to support our musical efforts, and student-raised money is a substantial part of that. Our goal this year is to raise $5000 from this sale. This is the ONLY fundraiser for the music department as a whole this entire school year. This money is used for items like music, supplies, repairs, transportation, instruments, rewards, uniforms/apparel, and many other day-to-day expenses. It is asked that all members of the music department help in this important fundraising event.

Students are asked to sell 10 items from the sales brochure, and are rewarded with cash on many different levels, including a day off pizza and movie party for sections of each group who sell the most per person!

If your family chooses not to sell, we respect your decision, but would kindly ask for at least a $25 tax-deductible donation in lieu of selling. Donations, however, do not count towards cash prizes. Donations DO count toward the section battles as 1 item for every $5 of donations. (e.g. $25 donation = 5 items)

Due to the passing of a Waynesfield faculty member and the corresponding Friday afternoon funeral service, Friday night's football contest has been pushed back to a 7:30pm start time. Our schedule has been adjusted accordingly:

FMB: Contest October 1 is at Pickerington North

I have contacted Pickerington North High School about performing at their contest on October 1. The contest starts at 5pm. Pickerington is an hour away, but is still, by far, the closest site for that date. We should be performing at 5pm, but this is subject to change.

Band members who wish to leave with a parent after our performance to come home for the dance will be excused with a note stating that they are not riding the bus home and whose parent they are traveling with. Students may not leave Pickerington with a student or other adult driving. Parents ONLY, please.

Details will be forthcoming. I have not heard back from Pickerington yet, but expect to shortly.

FMB: Please Read...Contest Options

I received an email from Mike Maynard at Thomas Worthington High School to regrettably inform me that their October 1 contest has been cancelled due to low participation. Only four bands had registered this year and it was not fiscally possible for them to host the contest. I have also heard of other contests suffering the same fate, but no others in central ohio.

Hello Folks,
It is with great disappointment that I must share that we are going to have to cancel the TWHS "Preview of Champions on October 1, 2011. For years we have had a full slate of bands enrolled and occasionally even had to turn bands away or start early to get everyone in... However, as of this afternoon, there were only four bands signed up for our event.
We apologize for the inconvenience, but wanted to let you know asap and the decision was just made this evening.

This leaves us in a pickle. All of the other evening contests on that date are over an hour's drive, and the FHS homecoming dance is the evening of October 1, which I promised members they would be able to attend. All of the 1 and 2 pm contests on the 1st are over two hours away from us in places like Coal Grove and Macedonia. I really don't want to make that long of a drive unless absolutely necessary.

What I'm thinking about doing is not competing on October 1 and using the third reserved date of October 8 as our second contest at Miami Trace High School, where we performed last year. This contest starts at 2pm and we would perform betwen 2 and 3pm. It is a short drive and a well-run and well-attended event. We could also do the 6pm Westerville Central contest, which is even closer. So what I'm asking is: DO YOU STILL HAVE OCTOBER 8 OPEN? Please let me know ASAP if you have a conflict. If everyone is available, I would like to make this date happen.

Plus, it gives us an extra week to get our whole show polished, and we would still have three weeks to put Senior show together. Let me know what you think, and also let me know if you have any conflicts with October 8.
